According to an official synopsis for the Avid Reader Press title, the ordeal sent him on "a remarkable, globe-spanning quest that revealed answers about his ancestry, inherited trauma and the deeper histories we carry."
It began with a cluster of autoimmune-related illnesses that attacked his skin, thyroid, eyes, lungs, and digestive system — and snowballed into a seven-year fight for survival.
That fight was defined by "chronic pain, a life-saving organ amputation, existential crisis and a prolonged fight for survival that left doctors with few answers and no clear explanation," the synopsis states.

Conventional medicine, despite his best efforts, offered little relief.

Desperate for answers, Manganiello turned to unconventional sources — consulting shamans, participating in pagan rituals, and combing through ancient myths and long-lost family records.
That unlikely path eventually led to what the synopsis describes as "the rebirth of his own spirituality." Along the way, the "True Blood" star dug into his own bloodline, unearthing ancestors shaped by violence, displacement, and chronic illness of their own.

"It was the most brutally difficult time of my life, one I wouldn't wish on my worst enemy, but also my greatest adventure," Manganiello shared. "I hope that what I went through on this journey can give readers hope that answers and healing may lie for them on the other side of whatever they are fighting through."
He continued, "The process of writing this book gave me the gift of perspective that helped me to see that my suffering was a cocoon from which I would emerge forever changed."

Shortly after the book's announcement, Manganiello posted an Instagram reel offering further insight into his experience — and revealing just how carefully he had guarded his secret.
"For the better part of the past decade — most people don't know this — but I suffered in silence, battling a deadly mystery illness, and other than a very small circle of family and friends, I hid it from the rest of the world, and until recently hadn't really shared what I'd gone through," he said.
He went on to describe years of unsuccessful treatments, noting that he had consulted "the best doctors in the world" without ever receiving a clear explanation for the root cause of his illness.

To buy himself time, he underwent multiple procedures that, in his own words, "mutilated" parts of his body and at points left him unable to stand or walk.
"I spent months and months heavily medicated while dealing with excruciating boughs of chronic pain," Manganiello said. Now, after three years of writing, "Bloodlines" is complete and he is ready to share his story. The book is slated for release on October 13.
