Teen Dies After Eating Poisoned Cake Sent with Mysterious Love Note
A 17-year-old girl has died after eating poisoned cake delivered by a courier. It was orchestrated to appear as though it came from a secret admirer, but a suspect has confessed to the crime.
On Saturday, May 31, 2025, Ana Luiza de Oliveira Neves received an unexpected cake delivery at her home in Greater São Paulo. The package came with an anonymous note.
"A gift for the most beautiful girl I've ever seen," the note read. Less than an hour after enjoying the desert, Neves began feeling unwell. Her father took her to the hospital, where she received treatment and was later discharged.
Neves appeared to be feeling better when she left the hospital, but she became ill again the next day. She died before reaching the emergency room on Sunday, June 1.
Police have arrested a suspect in connection to Neves' death—another 17-year-old girl who was reportedly a friend of the victim. In a statement obtained by CNN Brasil on Friday, the suspect confessed to the crime.
She admitted that she bought the cake that killed Neves and laced it with arsenic oxide. She had planned the delivery weeks in advance, and revealed that jealousy was her motive. However, according to CNN, she claimed she "did not intend for any greater harm to happen."
She had poisoned another girl before Neves, who also fell ill but recovered. She had hoped for the same outcome with Neves, not her death. Additionally, the suspect—whose identity remains undisclosed—claimed to be dealing with mental health issues but expressed remorse for the harm caused.
Neves' father also spoke out following his daughter's passing, revealing that the accused had slept at their home in the days leading to the incident.
"She saw the time I took her to the hospital and, the next day, she also saw my daughter falling in the bathroom and didn't show any reaction... After my daughter died, she still greeted me and hugged me," Neves' father recalled.
The Civil Police of Itapecerica da Serra are currently investigating the case, with the 17-year-old suspect in custody.
