‘Grease’ Star Stockard Channing Shares Rare Insight Into London Life as a ‘Recluse’
These days, the screen legend trades red carpets for quiet mornings with her dog in London. But behind that calm routine lies a story of heartbreak, reinvention, and unfinished ambition.
Stockard Channing is reflecting on her life, contrasting the quiet rhythms of her present with the whirlwind years that made her a household name.

The 82-year-old "Grease" actress penned a candid personal essay tracing her journey from Hollywood mainstay — known for roles in "The West Wing" and "Practical Magic" — to her current life abroad.
Channing revealed she has called London home since before the Covid-19 pandemic, a move shaped in part by profound loss.
She opened up about losing her longtime partner, producer Dan Gillham, sharing how the grief crept up on her over time. "My partner, Daniel, died in 2014 and it was more devastating than I realised; it had a lag effect," she wrote.

That shift in her personal life eventually prompted a change in scenery entirely.
"The pattern of my life shifted, so I shifted my life from Maine," she explained, noting that her relocation happened to "vaguely" coincide "with Trump getting elected and the way politics has changed in the US."
Today, Channing lives a solitary but contented life in England, her only companion being her dog, Benny. "I've lived alone since I lost Daniel and I'm happy being a recluse," she admitted.

The actress has been married four times, to Walter Channing Jr., Paul Schmidt, David Debin, and David Rawle, and spent two years single before beginning her relationship with Gillham in 1990.
Looking back on her past marriages, Channing described each one as tied to a distinct chapter of her life. "They all represent epochs of me," she wrote. Though she never had children with any of her husbands, she confessed the idea had crossed her mind more than once, particularly now.
"Children were thought about and, yeah, I think about them now because it'd be great to have someone taking care of me," she said. "But hey, children can be just as selfish as everybody else out there."

As for romance, Channing made clear in a January 2025 interview with The Sunday Times that she has no interest in pursuing another relationship.
"No, I think that would be such a pain in the [expletive]. I'm consolidating, thank you very much," she said. "I'm very happy with the friends I have. No. Life is good. Life is very good."
These days, Channing's routine is refreshingly simple. Though she typically wakes at 7 a.m., she doesn't rise from bed until much later in the morning.

"I don't get out of bed until my very large, very old dog tells me he needs feeding. After he's had his breakfast and I've made a strong pot of coffee, my dog walker takes him out and I go back to bed. My ideal morning," she shared.
Journaling is another daily ritual, one that has left a visible mark on her bedroom. "My duvet is covered in ink spots because for many years I've been keeping a diary. I sit there with my fountain pen and my thoughts. What do I feel about this or that?" she wrote.
By mid-morning, she typically fits in some form of exercise, whether it's pilates or weightlifting, though she doesn't always feel motivated to follow through.

"My favourite exercise days are when I play hooky. I know that exercising is the right thing to do but my brain tells me to go hide behind the bike sheds," she confessed.
Her first meal comes around lunchtime, and evenings usually involve either cooking or a simple salad. She also unwinds through pottery and often caps off her nights curled up with a book.

Despite decades in the industry, Channing shows no signs of slowing down professionally. She revealed in her essay that she is currently directing the stage production of "Krapp's Last Tape" in Edinburgh alongside David Westhead.
She's also set to reprise her role as Aunt Frances in the highly anticipated sequel "Practical Magic 2," starring alongside Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman.
Beyond that, though, Channing isn't making any promises about what comes next. "I'm not sure I'll do anything after that. Acting is like everything in life; you never know what's going to happen," she said.
