The singer was detained by the California Highway Patrol at approximately 21:30 local time on Wednesday evening. The incident reportedly occurred after officers received reports that Spears was driving erratically at high speed on a motorway.
A representative for the pop star addressed the situation in a statement to the BBC, saying, “This was an unfortunate incident that is completely inexcusable.” Spears was later released from jail in the early hours of Thursday morning.

Officers Report Signs of Impairment
According to the California Highway Patrol, Spears had been driving her black BMW 430i southbound on US-101 when officers stopped her vehicle.
Authorities said the singer had been reported for driving “erratically at a high rate of speed” before the traffic stop. After pulling the vehicle over, officers observed what they described as signs of impairment. Spears then participated in a series of field sobriety tests.
Following the arrest, Spears was taken briefly to a medical facility by law enforcement officers for blood testing. The procedure is part of the standard protocol used in California in suspected drink-driving cases. She was not admitted to the hospital afterwards.
Vehicle Impounded After Arrest
Jail records indicate that Spears’ vehicle was impounded after the incident. The documents also listed her occupation simply as “celebrity.”
Spears was reportedly driving alone at the time officers stopped her car on the motorway. Authorities have not released additional details about the results of the sobriety tests or the blood testing conducted after her arrest.
Court Appearance Scheduled for May
Spears is scheduled to appear at Ventura County Superior Court on 4 May in connection with the arrest. Her representative also spoke about the singer’s next steps following the incident.
“Britney is going to take the right steps and comply with the law and hopefully this can be the first step in long overdue change that needs to occur in Britney’s life,” the representative told the BBC. The statement continued, “Hopefully, she can get the help and support she needs during this difficult time.”
Family Support Mentioned in Statement
The representative also said Spears’ family will play a role in supporting her following the arrest. “Her boys are going to be spending time with her. Her loved ones are going to come up with an overdue needed plan to set her up for success for well being,” the statement concluded.
Spears is mom to two sons, Preston, 20, and Jayden, 19, whom she shares with her former husband Kevin Federline.

It remains unclear whether the account was removed permanently or temporarily.
