A New Take on a Global Franchise

"Harry Potter" remains one of the most successful franchises in the world. Based on the seven books by J.K. Rowling, the story has already been adapted into eight films, along with a stage play and multiple theme park attractions.

Now, Warner Bros. Discovery is expanding the franchise further with a television series. The project was first announced in April 2023 and will adapt the books in a serialized format.

Each season is expected to focus on one book, beginning with "Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone" and continuing through "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows."

In March 2026, HBO released the first official trailer for the series. Along with the footage, the network confirmed that the show will debut during the 2026 holiday season, specifically December 25, 2026.

The Christmas premiere positions the series as a major event release, aligning with the franchise’s long-standing popularity.

The central trio has also been introduced. Dominic McLaughlin will play Harry Potter, Arabella Stanton will take on Hermione Granger, and Alastair Stout will appear as Ron Weasley.

None of the cast members from the "Harry Potter" film franchise, including Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint, and Emma Watson, are expected to make cameo appearances in the TV series.

A Long-Term Plan

The series is designed as a long-term project, with plans to span a decade. Each season will adapt material from one of the seven books, though the exact number of seasons has not been finalized.

According to current plans, the structure of the series will depend on how the showrunner chooses to divide the story across seasons.

This approach allows for a more detailed adaptation compared to the films, giving each book more time to unfold on screen.

With a confirmed release date, a full cast lineup, and a clear adaptation plan, HBO’s "Harry Potter" series is shaping up to be a major addition to the franchise. As the premiere approaches, fans can expect a new interpretation of a familiar story, told over a longer and more detailed format.
