Gary Sinise, best known for his role as Lieutenant Dan Taylor in "Forrest Gump," stepped away from Hollywood following the devastating loss of his son, Mac, in 2024, and a shift in his personal priorities.

The acclaimed actor, who also starred in "Apollo 13" and the long-running TV drama "CSI: NY," enjoyed a prominent career in film and television. In 2017, he received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, and by 2020, he had added "I Still Believe," "Joe Bell," and "13 Reasons Why" to his list of acting credits.

However, Sinise's Hollywood career came to a sudden halt. "I haven't been back to work since 2019," he revealed in an exclusive interview with People. "Something may come along and it'll be right, but it's harder to leave home now."

Sinise's decision to step back was driven by a family crisis. In 2018, his son Mac was diagnosed with chordoma, a rare and aggressive form of bone cancer.

The diagnosis came just months after his wife, Moira, was diagnosed with stage three breast cancer. "It was a one-two punch," Sinise said of receiving both diagnoses so close together.

During Mac's treatment, which included five spinal surgeries between 2018 and 2020, Sinise dedicated himself fully to supporting his son. "I started putting everything I had into trying to find a miracle for Mac," he shared.

Despite his family's efforts, Mac's cancer prevailed. The tumors eventually paralyzed him from the chest down and impaired his arm mobility. Mac died on January 5, 2024, at the age of 33.

Meanwhile, Moira overcame breast cancer after enduring eight rounds of chemotherapy and 35 radiation treatments. With his wife now in remission, Sinise has found solace in their new life in Nashville, where they live with their daughters, Sophie and Ella, and enjoy time with their five grandchildren.

"Since losing Mac, I'm just holding my daughters a lot tighter... You think about all those things that are really important," Sinise shared. "I just want to be around the family."

Sinise, who has long been admired for his humanitarian work and support of veterans through the Gary Sinise Foundation, says he remains open to the possibility of returning to acting but, for now, is content with the quiet life he has chosen.
