Cavallari joined the MTV series in 2009 during its fifth season, following Lauren Conrad’s departure. Her arrival brought new storylines, including a high-profile romance with Brody Jenner. However, she has since made clear that much of that relationship was shaped for television.

A Hidden Relationship
In an April 7, 2026 episode of her podcast, "Let’s Be Honest With Kristin Cavallari," she revealed that she was secretly involved with a cameraman while filming the show.
“Do you know that I hooked up with a cameraman on 'The Hills'?” Cavallari said during the conversation.
At the time, she kept the relationship private while continuing to appear in a storyline with Jenner. The situation required her to balance her real life with the expectations of the show’s narrative.

Keeping Things Quiet
Cavallari explained that the relationship lasted for a few months and remained out of the public eye during most of that time. She maintained a professional approach while filming, even as her personal life unfolded behind the scenes.
That changed during a trip to Canada for the Much Music Awards. According to Cavallari, the relationship became public when paparazzi photographed them at the airport shortly before production wrapped. She said the exposure led to immediate consequences for the cameraman involved.

Consequences Behind the Scenes
Cavallari recalled that the crew member, identified as Miguel, was fired after the photos surfaced. The decision led to tension between her and the show’s creator, Adam DiVello.
“I remember I fought with [The Hills creator] Adam [DiVello],” she said, explaining that she believed the situation had been handled professionally up until that point.
Her comments suggest that the issue was not the relationship itself, but the public attention it received. Once the story became visible outside production, it forced a response from those in charge.
Questions About Fairness
During the podcast, Lauren Conrad pointed out that another relationship within the franchise had a different outcome. Whitney Port, who appeared on both "The Hills" and "The City," later married a producer from her show.

Cavallari questioned why the situations were treated differently. “How is that okay?” she asked, reflecting on the contrast.
The exchange highlighted how rules around relationships within production may not have been applied consistently.
Cavallari and Conrad first rose to prominence on "Laguna Beach," which aired from 2004 to 2006. That series set the stage for "The Hills," which became known for blending real-life events with produced storylines.
