Decades after their split, the "Hacks" star still remembers exactly who delivered the news that his engagement was off — and it wasn't his fiancée. He also revealed how an awkward reunion years later turned into one of the most ironic days of his career.

McDonald shared his thoughts during a sit-down with the SAG-AFTRA Foundation on Saturday, August 22, discussing his storied career.
"Geena Davis and I were engaged to be married for about five weeks," McDonald said with a laugh. "And she fell in love with Jeff Goldblum doing her first movie over there in Europe. And I don't blame him."
"She's stunningly beautiful and everything like that, but you know, what happens on sets — things sometimes happen. But, I was broken," he added. The film McDonald was referring to is the 1985 comedy "Transylvania 6-5000."

He revealed that Ed Begley Jr., who also starred in the movie, was the one to break the news that his engagement was off. "I was doing 'Hamlet' at the time, playing Laertes, and I had another three weeks to finish and then I was going to go over and join her," he shared.
"So I got the bad news from Ed Begley. He did me that solid," he continued. "I mean I was really, really devastated." Despite the heartbreak, McDonald ended up working with Davis again in 1991's "Thelma & Louise," in which he played her husband.

He explained that it was the only job available to him at the time, and humorously recounted how his casting came as a surprise to Davis as well.
"It's literally five years later and [Davis] said to [director Ridley Scott], 'Who'd you get to play my husband?' and he said, 'Oh, you'll love him, he's tall, he's funny, uh … what's his name? Chris McDonald,' and then she said, 'I used to go with him,' and he said, 'Even better, perfect!'" McDonald recalled.

McDonald said he awkwardly asked her to grab lunch the next day, and the former couple ended up hashing things out. "We hugged it out. We had a really lovely afternoon and then we did what I think is probably the most ironic things in the world," he recalled.
"Let's do wedding pictures and put them around the house for the set decorators. We went, 'Oh my god, are you kidding me?' So, yeah, we did all that. It turned out great and we're dear friends now," he shared.
A year after "Thelma & Louise" hit theaters, McDonald reflected on reuniting with Davis on set despite their past. He shared that making the movie with his old flame "was great," adding, "It was really cathartic."
Davis and Goldblum ultimately tied the knot in 1987, though she filed for divorce three years later. The actress has been married four times in total.

Aside from Goldblum, she was wed to restaurateur Richard Emmolo from 1981 to 1984, director Renny Harlin from 1993 to 1998, and pediatric plastic surgeon Dr. Reza Jarrahy from 2001 to 2017. She and Jarrahy share three children together.
As for McDonald, he married actress Lupe Gidley in 1992, and the couple share four kids.
