Kelly Clarkson Marks the 23rd Anniversary of Her ‘American Idol’ Victory
The "Catch My Breath" singer's journey began on the talent show more than two decades ago and changed the trajectory of her life forever. She was the very first winner of the show's debut season.
Kelly Clarkson is feeling nostalgic — and grateful. The singer-songwriter took to Instagram on Thursday, September 4, to commemorate the 23rd anniversary of her winning the very first season of "American Idol" in 2002.
She posted a photo from the moment she was named winner, embraced by her fellow contenders as confetti rained down on stage. "To everyone that took time 23 years ago to call in and vote for me, thank you 🙏," Clarkson began.
She continued: "Winning American Idol changed my life and I will be forever grateful for all of you that have supported me for so many years. It is a gift to find your purpose and passion, and to be able to make a living doing it is the cherry on top. Thank you, always."
The official "American Idol" page reposted the tribute to its Instagram Stories. "THIS is what it's all about, @kellyclarkson. You were an icon from the start. We will always love you," the account wrote over the post, which was set to Clarkson's 2002 hit "A Moment Like This."
Shortly after, the page posted a clip from the season finale that showed Clarkson and runner-up Justin Guarini moments before the winner was announced. As soon as Clarkson's name was called, the singer became visibly emotional and Guarini pulled her into an embrace. The rest was history.
