Johnny Depp Makes Rare Comments on Amber Heard Trial and Their Relationship
In a candid new interview, Johnny Depp breaks his silence on the impact of his legal battle with ex-wife Amber Heard, describing it as a defining and deeply personal fight for his reputation.
Johnny Depp has spoken publicly about the fallout from his marriage to Amber Heard and the defamation trial that followed, offering rare insight into how the ordeal reshaped his personal and professional life.
In an interview with The Times, the "Pirates of the Caribbean" actor reflected on the legal battle that stemmed from a 2018 op-ed in which Heard described herself as a "public figure representing domestic abuse." Although she didn't name Depp directly, his legal team argued the article implied he was the abuser, leading to a 2022 trial that drew international attention.
"Look, it had gone far enough," Depp said, explaining his decision to pursue the lawsuit. "I knew I'd have to semi-eviscerate myself."
Depp and Heard both accused each other of physical and verbal abuse during the trial. A Virginia jury ultimately awarded Depp $10 million in damages, while Heard received $2 million in a countersuit. The case was later settled, with Heard agreeing to pay Depp $1 million to resolve all financial claims.
Speaking about the toll of the allegations, Depp admitted he was hurt by people in his inner circle who remained silent. "There are people, and I'm thinking of three, who did me dirty. Those people were at my kids' parties. Throwing them in the air," he said.
"I understand people who could not stand up [for me], because the most frightening thing to them was making the right choice," the actor added.
Depp also reflected on the broader implications of the case during a cultural reckoning with abuse in Hollywood. "I was pre-MeToo. I was like a crash test dummy for MeToo. It was before Harvey Weinstein. And I sponged it, took it all in."
He described the night before the trial began in Virginia as calm, saying he felt ready to defend the truth. He believed that if he did not defend himself, it was like committing the acts he was accused of, and that was something he didn't want his kids to live with.
Depp and Heard were married in 2015 and separated in 2016. Shortly after filing for divorce, Heard obtained a restraining order, alleging domestic abuse, claims that both parties have disputed in court.
