Why Michelle Obama Says She's Glad She and Barack Didn't Have a Son
Former First Lady Michelle Obama recently shared candid reflections on parenting, offering a mix of humor and insight into why raising daughters, not sons, was the right path for her.
In a recent episode of her podcast, "IMO," co-hosted with her brother Craig Robinson, the former first lady explained why she's glad she only had daughters.
After a discussion about the challenges of raising boys in today's world, Obama offered thoughtful advice on how parents should raise sons.
"People say mothers raise their girls and love their sons. And I say, love your son but raise them, too," she said. Obama then cited several ways a parent can raise their son, such as dealing with the traffic stop, communicating in marriage, how to be a father, and how to be compassionate towards neighbors and the nation.
"Somebody who's gonna pay attention and care about something outside of himself," she then summarized.
New York radio host Angie Martinez responded, "You should have threw a boy in the mix."
Obama replied with a laugh, turning down the thought outright. "I'm so glad I didn't have a boy, because he would have been a Barack Obama."
While Martinez thought it would have been amazing to have a mini Barack Obama, his own wife didn't think so. "No, I would have felt for him," she admitted.
Before she could explain further, her brother chimed in and admitted that Obama just borrowed his sons.
Robinson is a father of four: son Avery and daughter Leslie from his first marriage, and sons Austin and Aaron from his second.
Obama, has been married to former President Barack Obama since 1992. They share two daughters: Malia, 26, and Sasha, 24. Though they spent much of their youth in the public eye, both have kept low profiles in adulthood.
