Authorities confirmed that Zampella was driving a Ferrari that crashed along Angeles Crest Highway, a scenic but winding roadway in the San Gabriel Mountains north of Los Angeles. The accident occurred at approximately 12:45 p.m. on December 21, 2025, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Zampella died at the scene, officials said. A passenger who was also in the vehicle was transported to a hospital, where they later died. The identity of the passenger has not yet been released.

Deadly Crash on Angeles Crest Highway

The crash involved a single vehicle, a 2026 Ferrari 296 GTS traveling southbound on Angeles Crest Highway. CHP officials said the car veered off the road shortly after exiting a tunnel, struck a concrete barrier, and burst into flames.

A passenger was ejected during the impact, authorities said. Zampella became trapped inside the vehicle as it caught fire and could not be rescued in time.

A witness provided video footage of the crash to investigators, reportedly showing the red Ferrari slamming into the barrier moments after leaving the tunnel. Officials have not disclosed what caused the vehicle to leave the roadway, and the investigation remains ongoing.

A Career That Shaped Modern Gaming

Zampella was widely regarded as one of the most influential creative forces in video game development. He rose to prominence as a co-founder and former CEO of Infinity Ward, the studio behind the massively successful "Call of Duty" franchise.

Launched in the early 2000s, "Call of Duty" went on to become one of the best-selling video game series of all time, transforming first-person shooters into a dominant genre and reshaping online multiplayer gaming.

After departing Infinity Ward, Zampella continued to leave an indelible mark on the industry through new creative ventures.

Building Respawn Entertainment

In 2010, Zampella co-founded Respawn Entertainment, a game studio based in Chatsworth, California. Under his leadership, Respawn became known for combining cinematic storytelling with fast-paced gameplay.

The studio earned critical and commercial success with titles including "Titanfall," "Titanfall 2," "Apex Legends," and "STAR WARS Jedi: Fallen Order."

In 2017, Respawn Entertainment was acquired by video game giant Electronic Arts, further cementing Zampella's standing as one of the industry's most trusted and visionary leaders. He continued to serve as head of the studio following the acquisition.
