The pilot, who was set to be married later that day, was killed alongside his three young nieces during what was meant to be a quick sightseeing flight before the ceremony.

A day that was supposed to be filled with celebration turned into an unimaginable tragedy when a helicopter crashed near Superior, Arizona, on Friday morning.

The pilot, David McCarty, 59, was set to get married later that day to his fiancée, Joelleen Linstrom, but the ceremony never happened. Instead, the crash claimed his life and the lives of his three young nieces, leaving a family and an entire community in mourning.

A Final Sightseeing Flight

McCarty, a Queen Creek man originally from Echo, Oregon, was an experienced pilot who owned multiple helicopters.

On the morning of January 2, he decided to take his nieces for a quick ride to show them the local sights before his wedding ceremony. The group took off from Pegasus Airpark in Queen Creek around 11 a.m., heading toward the rugged terrain near Telegraph Canyon

According to family members, McCarty was very familiar with the area. "He's flown that canyon numerous times. I would venture to say probably a hundred times, and with no issues," a relative shared with FOX 10 Phoenix. But this time, the flight ended in disaster.

The Victims Identified

The Pinal County Sheriff's Office and family members have identified the four victims. Alongside McCarty were his three nieces, all in their early 20s and also originally from Oregon: Katelyn Heideman, 21, Rachel McCarty, 22, and Faith McCarty, 21 (Rachel and Faith were sisters).

The young women were all cousins, and David was their uncle. Mary Jane Heideman, the mother of Katelyn and aunt to Rachel and Faith, shared her heartbreak with The Arizona Republic: “They were all so loved. The girls had such bright futures. It’s just hard to fathom this."

The news has devastated the small town of Echo, Oregon, where the girls were raised. A relative noted that the community is "struck with grief," explaining that in a place like Echo, "everybody had a hand in raising these girls."

Investigation into the Cause

While the FAA and NTSB are still working on an official cause, initial findings from the Pinal County Sheriff's Office point to a possible collision with a recreational slackline. These lines are often strung across canyons by outdoor enthusiasts.

Eyewitnesses reported seeing the helicopter strike a part of a line before the blades appeared to come off, causing the aircraft to fall to the canyon floor.

The loss is particularly staggering given the timing. "The families lost 50% of their children on the wedding day, which was supposed to be a celebration," a family member told FOX 10. "It's extremely tough. Nobody ever anticipates this sort of thing to happen, and it's just heart-wrenching."

A Community in Mourning

As the investigation continues, the focus remains on the families left behind. David and his fiancée had announced their engagement just months earlier in September.

What was meant to be a joyous gathering for a wedding has transformed into a collective effort to process a massive loss.

A family member wrote on social media, "Please continue to pray over every single family member as we process this heartbreak... They are all in heaven together."

The crash serves as a somber reminder of how quickly a day of joy can turn into one of profound sorrow. For now, the families are leaning on each other and their "village" back in Oregon as they navigate the difficult days ahead.
