Donald Trump Probes Joe Biden's Final Days in Office After Controversial Pardons
As the investigation gets underway, the current of state has offered sympathy to his predecessor following news of a life-threatening health diagnosis.
President Donald Trump's Justice Department is reportedly investigating pardons granted by former President Joe Biden during his final days in office.
Ed Martin, a Justice Department attorney, revealed in a June 2, 2025, email obtained by Reuters that he had been instructed to probe the clemency granted by Biden to family members and death row inmates.
The senior official disclosed that the inquiry involves whether the former leader "was competent and whether others were taking advantage of him through the use of AutoPen or other means."
An autoPen is a device that automatically attaches a signature to a document. It reportedly remains a mystery whether Biden used the device when granting pardons.
Per the email, the investigation will focus on the preemptive pardons issued to Biden's five relatives and clemency that prevented 37 federal prisoners from facing the death penalty, converting their sentences into life in prison.
The launch of an inquiry into Biden's decisions as former President of the United States comes weeks after Trump expressed sympathy for his cancer diagnosis.
"Melania and I are saddened to hear about Joe Biden's recent medical diagnosis. We extend our warmest and best wishes to Jill and the family, and we wish Joe a fast and successful recovery," the politician wrote on social media at the time.
Biden's office reportedly announced in May 2025 that he had been diagnosed with an "aggressive form of cancer" that had spread to his bones.
