According to a White House official who spoke to Reuters on May 28, 2025, Musk’s off-boarding process began that same day. The billionaire entrepreneur also confirmed his departure on X (formerly Twitter), writing a brief message of appreciation to President Donald Trump: "As my scheduled time as a Special Government Employee comes to an end, I would like to thank President [Donald Trump] for the opportunity to reduce wasteful spending."

While the exact reasons for his exit remain somewhat unclear, the timing suggests that his departure was triggered by his public criticism of a key administration policy. Just one day earlier, Musk openly condemned Trump's latest tax legislation.

"I was disappointed to see the massive spending bill, frankly, which increases the budget deficit, not just decreases it, and undermines the work that the DOGE team is doing," he said in an exclusive interview with CBS News.

Despite his exit, Musk is said to remain on amicable terms with the president. Musk had joined the Trump administration as a special government employee tasked with overhauling inefficiencies across federal departments.
