In the widely circulated video, the actor turns toward the photographer and tells him to "stop it." The photographer, appearing unfazed, smiles and attempts to grab Washington's arm.
The actor responds by pointing his finger directly at the photographer's face in warning, repeating his demand to stop. Despite the tension, Washington maintained his composure and walked away calmly after the encounter.
The incident occurred just shortly before Washington was surprised with an Honorary Palme d’Or at Cannes. The prestigious award was presented by director Lee, who has collaborated with Washington on five films.
Cannes Film Festival chief Thierry Frémaux revealed that the surprise honor was prompted by a personal request from Lee. "Denzel, because you are here, we want to make something special for you… it's a kind of way for us to tell you our adoration, what you have done in the history of cinema. Nobody knows about that except Spike Lee, who wrote me to do that," he revealed.
Washington was in awe after receiving the honorary Palme d'Or. "I'm blessed beyond measure and from the bottom of my heart, I thank you all. Thank you," he said, accepting the award.
