Christie Brinkley and Alexa Ray Joel Revisit ‘Uptown Girl’ in Heartwarming Video

In a new special with People, Christie Brinkley sits down with her daughter, Alexa Ray Joel, and talks about what went into the production of the music video for Billy Joel's "Uptown Girl."

The clip begins with Christie and Alexa sitting together, looking at a photo of Christie and Billy on the set of the "Uptown Girl" video.

"Wow, talk about a candid shot," Alexa remarks, giggling. "Dad looks like he's about to blink there. That's cute."

Christie explains that the picture shows the end of "Uptown Girl," where the young couple rides off in a motorcycle happily ever after.

She shared that the idea for the video came from a group of friends where everyone threw in ideas. "They said, 'You know, we've gotta do a music video for 'Uptown Girl,' and we've got an idea," Christie recalls.

They decided to use the gas station across from CBGB's in New York City. Eventually, someone suggested Christie play the "Uptown Girl" and she happily agreed.

Before then, Christie and Billy already had an inside joke tied to the song's title: Billy called Christie his "uptown girl" and he was the "Downtown Guy."

Filming wrapped—but what would follow was quite unexpected. "I almost got kicked out of the Screen Actors Guild," the actress shares, because she hadn't told her agent about her involvement in the visuals.

"I was thinking of it like a group of friends all doing this together," Christie explains in her defense. The video came out in 1983.

Christie and Billy would marry two years later, on March 23, 1985, and welcome Alexa. Shortly after, they began building their dream home in the Hamptons.

Unfortunately, their marriage ended in divorce following challenges that overwhelmed their relationship. They went on to marry other people and have more children.

Christie welcomed another daughter, model Sailor Brinkley-Cook, and a son, Jack Brinkley-Cook. Billy also had two more children: seven-year-old Remy, and 9-year-old Della.
