The team behind the long-awaited follow-up to the 1987 classic is making it clear that some things simply can't be replaced. Instead, they're focused on giving audiences room to grieve a beloved star while recapturing the magic that made the original a phenomenon.
A "Dirty Dancing" sequel is currently in the works, and fans of the Hollywood cult classic can rest assured that Patrick Swayze and the film's legacy will be honored rather than tainted by the use of artificial intelligence (AI).

The original 1987 film starred Swayze as Johnny Castle opposite Jennifer Grey's Frances "Baby" Houseman. Grey will reprise her iconic role in the forthcoming sequel alongside a cast of fresh young faces. Swayze died of pancreatic cancer in 2009 at age 57.
"That's one of the things that you really have to focus on: how to let people mourn him in a movie," Nina Jacobson, one of the sequel's producers, said during a panel at IndieWire's Future of Filmmaking 2026 Summit on Saturday, October 17.
She added, "And don't worry, we won't be bringing him back with AI."

Jacobson, 61, also reflected on the original film's lasting impact, noting that it broke new ground by tackling abortion in a major Hollywood romantic drama.
"I remember when I first saw it, it seemed like very glossy entertainment. Now it feels like kind of an indie," she said. "They take a lot of risks and they touch a lot of topics that people don't touch in movies anymore. If you tried to just slip by an abortion subplot in a romantic movie now, I think you'd get a lot of notes on that."
News of a "Dirty Dancing" sequel first surfaced in 2020, and in January of this year, Lionsgate confirmed that Grey would be returning as Baby. The studio also revealed that production would kick off later this year.

"The role of Baby has held a very deep and meaningful place in my heart, as it has in the hearts of so many fans over the years," Grey, 65, said in a statement at the time.
"I've long wondered where we might find Baby years later and what her life might be like, but it's taken time to assemble the kind of people that I felt could be entrusted to build on the legacy of the original film … and I'm excited to say that it looks like the wait will soon be over," she added.
The actress also addressed the idea of somehow bringing Swayze back, sharing a sentiment that Jacobson's recent remarks now echo. "All I can say is there is no replacing anyone who's passed — you never try to repeat anything that's magic like that," she said. "You just go for something different."

Jacobson, meanwhile, added that "Dirty Dancing" is "that rare film that is as emotional, exhilarating and rebellious today as it was the year it was released."
"To be able to work with Jennifer Grey and Lionsgate on the sequel is a genuine joy for Brad and me. We feel so fortunate to have been invited back to Kellerman's for one more dance," she said.

Details about the plot of the "Dirty Dancing" follow-up remain under wraps.
Kim Rosenstock ("Dying for Sex") is penning the script, with Jacobson and Brad Simpson on board as co-producers. Jacobson said she and her collaborators are "trying to chase the feeling of that original movie."
"Being able to tell a young love story that could take some of those risks but also inspire those feelings felt like an incredible chance for us," Jacobson, who is also a producer on the "Hunger Games" franchise, added.
