Prince Harry Palace Visits Are Handled From a ‘Risk Management’ Perspective, Insider Says

Fleeting signs of reconciliation between Prince Harry and his family have done little to erase years of tension. According to one royal commentator, Buckingham Palace remains guarded every time father and son come face to face.

It has been nearly six years since Prince Harry relinquished his royal duties alongside his wife, Meghan Markle, a move that led to a lasting rift with the royal family. That estrangement showed few signs of easing until recently.

There have been small hints of a thaw — including a 55-minute private sit-down between Harry and his father, King Charles, last September, their first meeting in almost two years. Even so, one side of the relationship appears far more cautious than the other.

Royal insider Kinsey Schofield claims the King's palace aides follow a strict risk-management protocol whenever Harry comes to visit.

"The King's private secretaries are also known to remain on standby, ready to step in if a conversation becomes uncomfortable or a difficult request is made, ending the meeting by reminding the King that his next engagement requires additional travel time and that he needs to leave," Schofield said.

She added that even the household staff play a part in this quiet oversight.

"During meetings, a housemaid or butler serving tea may intentionally linger rather than immediately leave the room," she explained. "It is the King and his courtiers who have carefully strategized how to engage with Prince Harry, often ensuring there are subtle witnesses in the room."

This approach, Schofield says, isn't new — it reportedly took shape years earlier, even before Queen Elizabeth II's death in 2022.

"Palace aides or trusted friends were often present during meetings and on phone calls, both as witnesses and to provide support if needed," she claimed of the late monarch's own precautions.

According to Schofield, royal staffers now treat Harry's visits strictly through a "risk management" lens. "Buckingham Palace now approaches every interaction with Prince Harry through the lens of protecting the institution rather than preserving the relationship," she claimed.

She acknowledged how that might come across to outsiders, but framed it as the product of years of strain.

"That might sound sad to some, but from the Palace's perspective, the pattern of the last several years has left them believing that many of Harry's decisions have ultimately served his own interests rather than the family's," Schofield said.

"Whether that's fair or not, it's the reality informing how they now manage these relationships."

Part of the difficulty, she suggested, stems from a pattern royal insiders have grown wary of: meetings with Harry and Meghan often being followed by "public disclosures or competing narratives," which she says has made rebuilding trust "incredibly difficult."

"Past experience has taught the Palace to approach any proposed meeting with caution," Schofield said. She also weighed in on reports suggesting Queen Camilla hoped to be present for the King's next meeting with Harry.

"My understanding is that Queen Camilla has little appetite for engaging with Harry and Meghan. She will support the King whenever he asks, but she sees no value in revisiting old grievances," Schofield said.

Her comments arrive as Harry and Meghan are expected to reunite with Charles this month, during a UK visit tied to the Year-To-Go festivities ahead of the Invictus Games 2027.

While Meghan is set to accompany Harry, it remains unclear whether she — or their children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet — will attend the family meeting with the King.
