Sean Penn was notably absent from the 2026 Academy Awards, despite winning Best Supporting Actor. Instead of attending the ceremony on March 15, he was in Ukraine, where he has remained a vocal supporter during the ongoing war.

The actor was photographed in Kyiv on March 16, one day after the Oscars broadcast. His absence stood out, especially as it marked his third Academy Award win.

Award Accepted in His Absence

During the ceremony, Kieran Culkin presented the award and accepted it on Penn’s behalf. At the time, Penn was already out of the country.

Reports indicated that Penn had traveled to Europe days before the Oscars. His intention was to spend time in Ukraine rather than attend the ceremony, continuing his long-standing support for the country.

Support for Ukraine

Penn has been a vocal supporter of Ukraine since the start of the full-scale war. His presence in Kyiv during the Oscars weekend reinforced that commitment.

On the same day Penn was seen in the country, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy shared a photo of the two in conversation. In an Instagram post, Zelenskyy wrote, “Sean, thanks to you, we know what a true friend of Ukraine is.You have stood with Ukraine since the first day of the full-scale war. This is still true today. And we know that you will continue to stand with our country and our people.”

A Celebrated Career

Penn’s latest win adds to a long list of achievements. He won Best Supporting Actor for his performance in "One Battle After Another," where he portrayed antagonist Steven J. Lockjaw.

This marks his third Academy Award. He previously won Best Actor for his roles in "Mystic River" in 2004 and "Milk" in 2009.

In addition to his wins, Penn has received several nominations over the years. These include performances in "Dead Man Walking," "Sweet and Lowdown," and "I Am Sam."

Choosing Advocacy Over Recognition

Penn’s decision to skip the Oscars underscores his commitment to causes beyond the film industry. While award ceremonies celebrate artistic achievement, his actions show a focus on real-world issues.

By choosing to be in Ukraine, Penn sent a message about where he believes his presence matters most. His absence did not diminish his achievement but instead added context to it.

Sean Penn’s Oscar win and absence from the ceremony tell a larger story about priorities and purpose. While he continues to earn recognition for his work as an actor, he remains deeply involved in global issues.
