
Hollywood Stars Mourning the Death of Robert Redford
Tributes have been pouring in since the news of the Hollywood giant's recent passing broke. From Meryl Streep to Ron Howard, they've all taken the time to honor his legacy.
Robert Redford, the critically acclaimed star of "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid" and "Out of Africa," has died. The legendary actor passed away in his sleep on Tuesday morning, September 16, 2025, at his home in Utah. He was 89.

In a statement to multiple media outlets, his rep. Cindi Berger confirmed his death. "Robert Redford passed away on Sept. 16, 2025, at his home at Sundance in the mountains of Utah — the place he loved, surrounded by those he loved," Berger said. "He will be missed greatly. The family requests privacy."

After the news broke, his "Out of Africa" co-star Meryl Streep paid her respects. "One of the lions has passed," the actress said in a statement to PEOPLE. "Rest in peace my lovely friend."

Author Stephen King also paid tribute to "The Horse Whisperer" star. "Robert Redford has passed away. He was part of a new and exciting Hollywood in the 70s and 80s. Hard to believe he was 89," he wrote on X.

"Our film, 'CODA,' came to the attention of everyone because of Sundance. And Sundance happened because of Robert Redford. A genius has passed. RIP Robert," actress Marlee Matlin penned.

Redford founded the Sundance Film Institute in 1981 to support independent filmmakers, composers, and theater artists. The nonprofit has hosted the Sundance Film Festival ever since. Like Matlin, Ron Howard also acknowledged its impact and importance.

Leonardo DiCaprio also joined the score of celebrities remembering Redford. "His unwavering commitment to protecting our planet and inspiring change matched his immense talent," the "Inception" star said. "His impact will endure for generations to come."
