Tom Brady Reflects on Scottie Scheffler's Choice to Put Family Before Golf
Tom Brady responded publicly to Scottie Scheffler's recent comments about prioritizing family over career, highlighting differing perspectives between the two athletes on balancing personal life and professional ambition.
Tom Brady couldn't help but weigh in after watching Scottie Scheffler's press conference interview, a moment that revealed contrasting views between two elite athletes on the balance between professional sports and fatherhood.
Scheffler, currently the world's number one golfer, emphasized that being a husband and father takes precedence over his career. His remarks came just days before he clinched his fourth major championship on the PGA Tour.
During a press conference at Royal Portrush Golf Club on July 14, 2025, Scheffler stated, "At the end of the day, it's like, this is not a fulfilling life," referring to the solitary pursuit of winning. "And all of a sudden you get to number one in the world and you're like, 'What's the point? Why do I want to win this tournament so bad?' Because if I win, it's going to be awesome for about two minutes."
He added, "If my golf ever started affecting my home life or it ever affected the relationship I have with my wife or with my son, that's gonna be the last day that I play out here for a living. This is not the be-all, end-all. This is not the most important thing in my life. And that's why I wrestle with, 'Why is this so important to me?' Because I would much rather be a great father than I would be a great golfer. [sic]"
Brady, a seven-time Super Bowl champion and widely regarded as one of the greatest athletes of all time, responded through his weekly newsletter, "199."
"Scottie said he'd rather be a better father and husband than a good golfer," Brady wrote. "And my question is: why are those mutually exclusive?"
He went on to say that while being a family man and a professional athlete may sit on different blocks of the pyramid, they still belong to the same structure. "I think part of being a great father is being a great example of doing what it takes to take care of your family. I chose to do it by playing football," he explained.
Brady concluded by suggesting that his commitment to excellence in football was, in fact, a reflection of his dedication to his role as a father and provider.
