Former British Soccer Star Loses Third Battle with Cancer
Former Rochdale AFC midfielder Joe Thompson has died after a lengthy battle with cancer. He is survived by his wife, who shared the news of his passing, and their two kids.
Joe’s wife, Chantelle Thompson, announced his death on April 18 with a lengthy and heartbreaking statement on Instagram.
She began by admitting that the following words were ones she thought she’d never have to write. Joe had died during the early hours of April 17 at home, surrounded by his loved ones. He was 36.
Chantelle expressed deep gratitude for her husband’s presence in her life and admired the strength he possessed during his battle.
“I know he will be deeply missed by everyone and the world will not be the same without his contagious energy. Long may his legacy and impact live on!! 🔥” she said.
Chantelle also shared that Joe wanted an open funeral; therefore, anyone who felt that he made an impact in their lives in any way were welcome to attend. Dates will be announced once confirmed.
Joe was first diagnosed with a rare form of cancer called nodular sclerosis Hodgkin lymphoma in 2013. He went into remission in 2014, but received a second diagnosis in 2017 and needed life-threatening stem cell treatment.
He came out stronger, but would receive his third diagnosis in 2024. He played professional football for over a decade before retiring in 2019 and becoming an inspirational speaker and author.
