A Generous Announcement
While promoting his upcoming movie "Now You See Me: Now You Don't," Eisenberg made the surprising disclosure during an interview on the "Today" show. He shared that his decision to donate an organ came from his growing interest in helping others through blood donation.
"I'm actually donating my kidney in six weeks. I really am," Eisenberg said, drawing both astonishment and admiration from host Craig Melvin, who praised the actor for his generosity.
Eisenberg explained how his passion for giving began with something small. "I got, like, bitten by the blood donation bug. I love it," he told Melvin. What began as a simple act soon evolved into a far greater gesture.

From Blood Donations to a Life-Changing Gift
When Melvin pointed out that donating blood and donating a kidney were very different, Eisenberg agreed but explained that he was participating in an altruistic donation, also known as a non-directed living donation, scheduled for mid-December.
An altruistic donation occurs when someone gives an organ, usually a kidney, to a recipient they do not know personally. The recipient is matched based on medical compatibility rather than personal connections. It is considered one of the most selfless forms of donation since the donor receives no direct benefit and often never meets the person whose life they help save.

Eisenberg said that, from his point of view, the procedure was both safe and essential. He explained that many people need kidney transplants and that the process carries very little risk for the donor. "I think people will realize that it's a no-brainer, if you have the time and the inclination," he said.
He added that his decision was influenced by the urgent need for donors and his belief that small acts of generosity can make a significant difference.
A Thoughtful Decision with Family in Mind
Eisenberg, who shares an eight-year-old son named Banner with his wife, said that another reason for becoming a donor was the reassurance that his family would be prioritized if they ever needed a living kidney donation in the future.
That policy, observed by many transplant networks, gives altruistic donors and their immediate family members priority status should they one day require a kidney transplant themselves.
Medical professionals note that people who donate a kidney typically recover within two to four weeks and can return to their normal activities soon after surgery. Living with one kidney is generally safe for healthy individuals.

Eisenberg’s decision highlights the importance of organ donation and serves as an example of compassion in action. By choosing to help someone he does not know, the actor is raising awareness about how one generous choice can save a life and inspire others to consider doing the same.
