Kate Middleton Speaks Out About Difficult Phase Following Cancer Treatment After Missing Royal Ascot
Kate Middleton opened up about the emotional and physical challenges of recovery after cancer treatment during a heartfelt visit to Colchester Hospital, marking a rare and meaningful return to public duty.
The Princess of Wales, 43, made a poignant appearance at Colchester Hospital in Essex on July 2, 2025, where she visited a therapeutic well-being garden designed to support patients, NHS staff, and visitors. During her visit, she spoke candidly about the difficult stage that often follows cancer treatment, sharing personal reflections on her own health journey.
"You put on a sort of brave face, stoicism through treatment. Treatment's done, then it's like, 'I can crack on, get back to normal,' but actually, the phase afterwards is really, really difficult," said the Princess.
She emphasized that while the structured support of a medical team may end after treatment, the struggle to return to everyday life often continues. "You're not necessarily under the clinical team any longer, but you're not able to function normally at home as you perhaps once used to."
Princess Catherine emphasized the importance of having support during the often-overlooked phase that follows cancer treatment, noting that guidance during remission can be invaluable. Describing the experience as life-changing for both patients and their families, she added, "You have to find your new normal, and that takes time... and it's a roller coaster. It’s not smooth, like you expect it to be. But the reality is you go through hard times."
The Princess publicly revealed her cancer diagnosis and chemotherapy treatment in March 2024, stepping back from royal duties for much of the year. In September 2024, she announced she had completed chemotherapy and confirmed in January that she was in remission.
Kate returned to royal duties in 2025 but did not attend an anticipated return to Royal Ascot on June 18. She was said to be disappointed not to join Prince William at the horse racing event, but those close to her emphasized that she is still working to find the right balance while easing back into official duties following cancer treatment.
