Joe Biden and Kamala Harris Attend Funeral for Melissa and Mark Hortman
Former President Joe Biden and former Vice President Kamala Harris attended the funeral of Minnesota Rep. Melissa Hortman and her husband, Mark Hortman, in a somber service marked by grief and solidarity in Minneapolis on Saturday.
On June 28, 2025, Joe Biden and Kamala Harris were seated in the front row at the Basilica of Saint Mary, joined by Minnesota Governor Tim Walz. They attended the service that honored the lives of Melissa and Mark Hortman, who were fatally shot earlier in June at their home in Stillwater, Minnesota.
A poignant moment came when Biden and Harris stood to recite "The Lord's Prayer" with fellow mourners, briefly holding hands as they joined in the collective tribute. The scene was captured in a livestream of the event shared by WCCO.
Governor Walz, 61, invited Harris to attend on behalf of the Hortmans' children, Sophie, 28, and Colin, 30, who requested her presence at the ceremony.
Melissa and Mark were killed on June 14, 2025 along with their dog Gilbert. That same day, Democratic State Senator John Hoffman and his wife, Yvette Hoffman, were also shot at their home, located nine miles away. Both survived their injuries.
Vance Boelter has been charged with two counts of murder and two counts of attempted murder in connection with the shootings. Authorities say the investigation is ongoing.
