Jay Leno Reflects on Taking Care of His Wife Following Dementia Diagnosis
The comedian recently sat down with journalist John Bensinger for a lengthy interview, touching on his career, his childhood, and relationship with his parents. Notably, the TV star also spoke about caring for his wife.
Jay Leno has been married to Mavis Leno for 45 years, and the former host has never been more committed. She was diagnosed with advanced dementia, prompting Jay to file for conservatorship over her estate.

When John asked what he had learned about himself since becoming Mavis' primary caregiver, he responded, "Well, I have never been particularly challenged. I was not in the army. I didn't have to shoot anybody. I didn't have to risk my life."
Jay continued, saying when you get married, "you sort of take a vow," and ask yourself, "Will I live up to this? Or will I be like a sleazy guy if something happens to my wife—I'm out banging the cashier at the mini mart?"

Jay chose not to be the latter. "I enjoy the time with my wife. I go home, I cook dinner for her, watch TV and it's okay," he said. He noted that Mavis was a "very independent woman," and he appreciated being needed.
He also acknowledged how much their dynamic had changed since her diagnosis, and the challenges that came with it. Still, he said, "I would rather be with her than doing something else."
Jay filed for conservatorship over Mavis' estate in January 2024. His motive for the petition was to set up a living trust for his wife to ensure she had "managed assets" that would provide her with future care if he passed away.
The documents, obtained by People, said Mavis did not contest nor did she want anyone else acting as her conservator. It was granted in April of that year.
