Authorities said Johnson was facing opponent Corey Newell in the third and final round when he suddenly went down. According to a town spokesperson who spoke with NBC 5 Chicago, an ambulance was dispatched at 8:38 p.m. for "an injured fighter." Johnson was taken to Loyola University Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 12:01 a.m.
Authorities Launched an Investigation
The Cook County Medical Examiner's Office confirmed that an autopsy has been scheduled to determine Johnson's cause and manner of death. The match was Johnson's first Thai boxing bout, and event officials stated he had passed all required medical checks prior to entering the ring.
The Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulations (IDFPR) is also reviewing the circumstances surrounding Johnson's death.
In a statement, a spokesperson said, "The Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation offers their sincere condolences to the family and loved ones of Mr. Johnson. The agency is aware of the events and will be thoroughly reviewing the circumstances surrounding Mr. Johnson's passing after his amateur Muay Thai bout at Cicero Stadium."

Event promoter Joe Goytia addressed the tragedy in a statement shared on Facebook. "This is a post I hoped to never make," he wrote. "Last night, one of the fighters in our event, Isaac Johnson, collapsed towards the end of his fight. Medical attention was given by medical staff on hand and he was transported to hospital. I was then informed at around 1:30 a.m. this morning that he didn't make it."
"I don't have the words to express how I feel right now," Goytia added, offering his condolences to Johnson's loved ones. "We will know more as the medical report is released."
Team Remembers Johnson as a Beloved Friend and Father
Johnson's gym, Mission MMA Chicago, also mourned his loss in an Instagram message, remembering him for the person that he was. "He was an incredible person. A great friend and loving father. He is missed by us all," the statement read.
The team asked for privacy as his family grieves and noted they are waiting for the family's approval before organizing community support.
"We pray that Isaac Johnson rests in peace and that his family finds comfort in knowing how loved he was by us all," the statement concluded.
Authorities and event organizers said additional details will be released once the medical examiner completes the autopsy.
