"There are no further details available at this time, and her family has asked for privacy in this moment of great sadness," a spokesperson told People at the time the news broke.

"The Keaton family are very grateful for the extraordinary messages of love and support they have received these past few days on behalf of their beloved Diane, who passed away from pneumonia on October 11," their statement read.
They went on to share some of the causes Keaton held close to her heart. "She loved her animals and she was steadfast in her support of the unhoused community, so any donations in her memory to a local food bank or an animal shelter would be a wonderful and much appreciated tribute to her," the statement continued.
Shortly after news of her death broke, a friend of the film star told People that her health had taken a sharp turn in recent months. "She declined very suddenly, which was heartbreaking for everyone who loved her," the friend said.
"It was so unexpected, especially for someone with such strength and spirit. In her final months, she was surrounded only by her closest family, who chose to keep things very private," the friend added. "Even longtime friends weren't fully aware of what was happening."

In the months leading up to her death, Keaton had also listed her beloved home, stunning fans after she said she planned to reside in it permanently. The renowned home flipper, acclaimed for her taste in interior design, had even written a book about her dream house titled "The House that Pinterest Built."
She had moved into the property in 2017 following an extensive eight-year renovation. But, in March of this year, she listed the estate for $29 million. She lived with her Golden Retriever, Reggie, whom she adopted in 2020.
Keaton was often seen on daily walks with Reggie, but suddenly ceased to be seen in recent months. "She lived in Brentwood for many years," a source told People. "She loved her neighborhood."
"Up until just a few months ago, she'd walk her dog every day," the source noted, adding that the actress was usually dressed the same on those walks, wearing a hat and "her signature sunglasses" regardless of the weather.
"She was always very nice, funny and chatty," the source added. "She'd talk to her dog like he was a person. She was eccentric and had this old-school Hollywood aura. She was very, very special."
