Broadway veteran and Tony Award-winner Kristin Chenoweth took center court on Sunday to sing the national anthem ahead of Game 7 of the NBA Finals between the Indiana Pacers and Oklahoma City Thunder. Her performance, marked by theatrical flair and vocal range, quickly sparked mixed reactions across social media.

Chenoweth, who hails from Oklahoma, began the anthem in a traditional tone but gradually infused it with her signature Broadway style. By the anthem's conclusion, she had leaned fully into her theatrical background, delivering powerful high notes that earned both praise and criticism online.

Critics argued her rendition was too embellished for a national sporting event. "If you can't sing it the way it was written please don't sing it at all," one viewer wrote. Others echoed similar sentiments, saying it detracted from the anthem's intended tone.

"Completely ruined the anthem with whatever that high note was at the end," another echoed. "Why fix what's not broken? Changing it up doesn't make it better," commented a third critic.

Supporters, however, praised Chenoweth's vocal range and emotional delivery. "Perfect in every way. Ranks in the top five best ever renditions of The Beautiful Star-Spangled Banner, [sic]" one fan commented. Another wrote, "Her range was FANTASTIC! There was nothing wrong with her performance."

Chenoweth is no stranger to performing the anthem at major events, but the polarized response to her NBA Finals performance highlights the ongoing debate over how much artistic license should be taken with the nation’s most iconic song.
