LeBron James on Why He Skipped the 2025 Met Gala

The basketball star was set to make his Met Gala debut on May 5 as an honorary co-chair, but announced the unfortunate reason for his non-attendance that same night.

LeBron James was named the 2025 Met Gala’s honorary co-chair in October 2024, marking an exciting and historic milestone in his career.

The Lakers small forward was to join fellow chairs Pharrell Williams, Colman Domingo, A$AP Rocky, Lewis Hamilton, and Anna Wintour.

Fans were eager to see LeBron take part in this year’s spring exhibition, “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style.” However, just hours before the event was set to begin, LeBron told fans on X that he wouldn’t be able to attend.

“Unfortunately because of my knee injury I sustained at the end of the season I won’t be able to attend the Met Gala in NY tonight as so many people have been asking and congratulating me on! Hate to miss an historical event! [sic]” he wrote.

LeBron added that his wife, Savannah James, would be attending in his place—and indeed, Savannah showed up and showed out.

The businesswoman graced the red carpet in a burgundy mermaid pinstripe gown that blends a structured suit jacket with a corset-style bodice. She kept her accessories and hairstyle simple, letting the ensemble speak for itself.
