On April 11, 2025, Demarrion Carter was playing basketball in his backyard during the evening when someone approached the 14-year-old and fatally shot him.

He was rushed to the hospital shortly afterward, where he sadly succumbed to his wound. Police have yet to identify a suspect, but believe the attack was targeted. The investigation is ongoing.

One of his friends and mentor, Khamani Ehilpotts, struggled to come to terms with his death. "I am still in shock and disbelief. I absolutely have no words," he said.

Carter had been involved in the Empowerment 3D mentorship program, when he met another mentor, Damien Greer, who expressed his grief.

"He called me 'Pops.' He just did. He was just a good kid and didn't deserve this," Greer said. "He don't have no enemies."

Carter was fondly remembered by those who knew him, including his neighbour, Roco Boddie, who said Carter often played with his dog and sister. "He was a great kid overall," Boddie said. "He's not in the streets. So, this right here is tragic."

Another mentor who spoke with FOX 5 Atlanta described the close bond he shared with Carter. "He was more than just a mentee; he was my son. He listened to everything I asked him to do," he shared.

The mentor recalled Carter's integrity, and how he faced situations—good or bad—head on. His first grade teacher, Jeanette Wilson, started a GoFundMe to help his family with funeral expenses as there was no insurance.

The funds will also cover hotel and moving expenses, as Carter's family no longer wants to reside where their son was killed. As of this writing, they've raised 66% of their $12,000 goal.

"To know Demarrion was to love him. He was truly one of a kind!" Wilson shared. "Please be in prayer for his mom, sisters, and the rest of his family."
