Looking Back on Frank Caprio's Biggest Regret as a Judge Before His Death
Judge Frank Caprio once reflected on a painful misstep from his earliest days on the bench — an experience that would shape his reputation as one of the most compassionate judges in America.
Judge Frank Caprio once revealed what he considered the biggest mistake of his judicial career. In a video, he grew visibly emotional as he recalled the memory.
"I get crumbled," he admitted. Even after 38 years on the bench at the time, the moment never left him. It happened on his very first day in court, when he asked his father — whom he described as "the most decent man" he had ever known — to watch his first case.
A woman appeared before him with three children and $300 in unpaid parking tickets. She explained that she couldn't pay because she simply didn’t have the money.
Caprio suggested a payment plan, but the woman said she still would not be able to pay. He told her the fine was $300 and warned that if she did not pay, her car would be booted.
When court ended, his father confronted him. Caprio recalled feeling justified at the time, believing the woman had been arrogant and rude.
But his father corrected him, saying, "She was scared. You should have talked to her. You should have understood her problems. You can't treat people like that, Frank." From that day on, Caprio said, it never happened again.
Judge Frank Caprio died at 88 after a battle with pancreatic cancer. He had previously undergone treatment and was in recovery, but a recurrence led to his hospitalization and death.
Caprio became widely known as the nicest judge in the world through his long-running, Emmy-nominated television program "Caught in Providence" and his social media presence, where he attracted millions of followers.
