Dick Van Dyke Drops Out of Event Last Minute Due to Illness
The longtime actor was scheduled to host a comedy event at his and his wife's theater in Malibu over the weekend. It had been announced just over a week prior.
Dick Van Dyke was expected to attend the Vandy Camp one-day festival at the Arlene and Dick Van Dyke Theater at Malibu High School on Saturday, June 28.
The 99-year-old entertainer was not only to serve as host, alongside his wife, Arlene Silver, but the couple was included in the line-up of musicians, as they planned to perform with their musical group, The Vantastix.
However, as the event began at noon, it was only Silver who addressed the crowd. According to People, the 53-year-old remarked that she was "not the Van Dyke you're expecting" as she began her speech.
"I have to inform you that Dick is not up to coming to celebrate with us today. I'm sorry. When you're 99 and a half years old, you have good days and bad days ... and unfortunately, today is not a good day for him, and he's sick that he can't be here," she said.
Still, she felt "pretty confident" he would be present at the next Vandy Camp. The couple — who have been together since 2006 and married since 2012 — began hosting the Vandy Camp, described as a "whimsical, vintage circus," earlier this year in March.
They had a second installation of the event in May.
