'Flourishing' Pregnant Mum, 22, Dies Unexpectedly in Sleep
Charlie Comer, a 22-year-old mom from Devon, died suddenly in her sleep while 20 weeks pregnant with her second child. Her family says the death was completely unexpected, and they are now mourning the loss of both Charlie and her unborn baby boy, Arlo.
A young mom from Devon has died suddenly in her sleep while 20 weeks pregnant, leaving her family heartbroken and searching for answers.
Charlie Comer, 22, passed away on Monday night, October 13, 2025. She had been expecting her second child, a baby boy she planned to name Arlo. According to her mother, 42-year-old Carrie Burns, Charlie had been feeling unwell that day but had no serious health concerns.
“She went to bed on the Sunday night; she hadn't been feeling too good, and never woke up again,” Carrie told Devon Live. “They couldn't find any cause in the post-mortem, so we're waiting now while they run tests and things.”
Carrie said Charlie had some morning sickness, but otherwise seemed healthy. “She’d had a chippy the night before, and she assumed the food was a bit dodgy,” she added.
Charlie had an 18-month-old daughter, Remi-Jade, who now lives with her father. Carrie said Remi is too young to understand what’s happened. “We just have to do what we can for her now. We try to make sure she knows who her mum is and that she loved her so much.”
The suddenness of Charlie’s death has left her family struggling to come to terms with what happened. Carrie said the initial post-mortem didn’t reveal any answers, and further testing is underway. There’s no date yet for the inquest.
“It’s a real struggle, not knowing what’s caused it and why this has happened. It’s so much harder,” Carrie said. “If we could make some sense of it... At least when you know why, you can start to process it a bit.”
Carrie also revealed that Charlie had made huge progress in her mental health and was feeling hopeful about the future. “She was finally in a place where she was happy and really positive about the future and excited for the baby. She was getting help for her mental health, and she was really flourishing. It was so beautiful to see.”
Charlie had already picked out the name Arlo after attending a gender scan. Carrie has asked for her unborn grandson to remain with Charlie during the post-mortem. “We requested that the baby stay with her... They sent her to Southampton to have a specialist post-mortem to make sure the baby was kept in Charlie,” she stated.
To help cover funeral costs, the family set up a fundraiser on GoFundMe, which has raised over £2,000 so far (roughly $2,800).
On the page, Carrie wrote: “Charlie had her struggles in life but she had just found her light again and was so looking forward to the future with her baby boy and her beautiful daughter Remi-Jade. To be taken so young is just beyond devastating.”
Charlie is remembered as a bold, vibrant person who made a lasting impression on those around her. “She loved to make people happy and laugh,” Carrie also told DevonLive. “She will be so missed by everyone who knew her.”
