Michael was found unresponsive on Thursday morning, July 3, at his home in Malibu. Police and emergency services were dispatched to his residence following a 911 call and pronounced him dead at the scene at 8:25 a.m. local time. He was 67.
His manager, Ron Smith, confirmed to NBC4 that he died from cardiac arrest. Following his passing, Victoria posted a black-and-white photo of herself, Michael, and their mother, Elaine Madsen, beaming as they posed for the picture.
"My brother Michael has left the stage," she began. "He was thunder and velvet. Mischief wrapped in tenderness. A poet disguised as an outlaw. A father, a son, a brother—etched in contradiction, tempered by love that left its mark."
She continued, "We're not mourning a public figure. We're not mourning a myth—but flesh and blood and ferocious heart. Who stormed through life loud, brilliant, and half on fire. Who leaves us echoes—gruff, brilliant, unrepeatable—half legend, half lullaby."

"I'll miss our inside jokes, the sudden laughter, the sound of him. I'll miss the boy he was before the legend. I miss my big brother," Virginia penned. She then expressed gratitude for the outpouring of love her family has received since Michael's death.
"In time, we'll share how we plan to celebrate his life. But for now—we stay close, and let the silence say what words can't," she wrote.
