Police suspect no foul play. His publicist, Liz Rodriguez, later confirmed to CNN that he had suffered cardiac arrest when he was found unconscious. Shortly after, three of his sons were spotted outside his residence.

Michael was married three times and had five children from two marriages. He first wed Georgeanne LaPiere from 1984 to 1988, then moved on with Jeannine Bisignano. The pair married in 1991 and welcomed two sons, Christian and Max.
They divorced in 1995 and Madsen remarried DeAnna Madsen the following year. The couple had three sons: Calvin, Hudson, and Luke. Hudson tragically died by suicide in 2022. Not long after, Michael and DeAnna separated, but it wasn't until September 2024 that Michael filed for divorce.
