My Husband's Inappropriate Relationship with His 'Work Wife' Ended When I Showed Him a Certain Business Card

After being cheated on in the past, I thought I'd found a great and loyal husband, and then I met his "work wife." I tried to give him the benefit of the doubt, but his dismissive attitude and their increasingly close relationship left me no choice. The ultimatum was coming.

I thought I had left my trust issues behind when I married Walter. For three years, I worked hard to keep my past experiences with cheating from affecting our relationship. In our 40s, we were both mature enough to understand the importance of boundaries or so I believed.

Everything changed at Walter's company holiday party. The venue sparkled with white lights and tinsel, but my attention focused on something else entirely: a woman I had never seen before, who kept touching my husband's arm and laughing at everything he said.

Her name was Ella, and watching her interact with Walter made my stomach turn.

"Who is she?" I asked Walter on the drive home, my fingers gripping my purse tighter than necessary.

"Just a coworker," he replied, keeping his eyes on the dark road ahead.

"Why does she feel free to touch you?"

"Barbara," he sighed. "You're reading too much into it."

I wasn't.

Over the next few weeks, I noticed how Walter's phone constantly lit up with messages. I hadn't even been suspicious of him before.

But now, I noticed Ella's name appearing over and over. She sent him memes late at night and texted during holidays. I wondered what they had discussed before I found out about her.

Every time I brought it up, though, Walter dismissed my concerns.

"You're being insecure because of your ex," he said during one of our arguments. "We're just friends."

"Then quit your job," I suggested. "You get offers all the time. Find another company."

"I'm not leaving a job I love because you're jealous of a friendship," he snapped back. "I'm done with this discussion."

I wasn't.

The situation reached its breaking point when I saw Ella's Instagram post after New Year's: a photo of her and Walter at lunch, captioned "My Work Husband ❤️."

I showed Walter the post with shaking hands.

"It's just office humor," he said, shrugging it off. "Everyone uses that term."

"You know I'm uncomfortable with your friendship," I started, gritting my teeth. "Ask her to take it down."

"No."

"No?" I asked, outraged. "I can't believe this."

That night, I lay awake thinking about how much our marriage had changed. The man who once understood my fears about infidelity now acted like I was crazy for having concerns and shut me down whenever I tried to ask for what I needed.

So, the distance between us grew larger each day.

I reached out to my friend Eveline, who had recently gone through a divorce. She listened to my story and handed me her lawyer's business card. "Just in case," she said. "He's expensive, but he's the best. A shark."

The card sat in my wallet for a week before I finally snapped after seeing Walter laughing about another meme that Ella had sent him while we were having dinner.

"We need to talk," I said, placing the lawyer's card on our kitchen table. The granite surface felt cold under my fingers. "Either you acknowledge this problem with Ella and fix it, or I'm calling this number."

Walter picked up the card slowly, and his face paled as he recognized the name. My friend's divorce had been all over our social circle; messy, expensive, and very public.

"You're serious," he whispered.

"I'm done watching another woman flirt with my husband while he pretends it's normal. Either you quit your job and we start couples counseling, or I'm done."

Walter sat back in his chair and stayed quiet. My heart started breaking at the idea that he wouldn't even fight for us, that he couldn't see how his friendship was hurting me.

But then, I saw a small sniffle and saw him wiping a tear from his eye. "I didn't realize… I never meant to hurt you," he said quietly. "I just... I liked the attention."

"You did hurt me," I nodded, "and if you need that kind of attention, I'll call the lawyer tomorrow and begin the process."

"No!" he almost shouted, standing and kneeling in front of me. "You're right. I've been awful to you. I'm done with this job."

I didn't believe him that night. He might have panicked at the idea of getting divorced, but the next day, Walter submitted his resignation.

A week later, we sat in our first counseling session. As I watched him honestly discuss his behavior with our therapist, I felt hope return. Sometimes it takes seeing what you might lose to understand what you need to protect.

Here's another story: Umma told Brandon she couldn't do Valentine's Day this year and he responded with a romantic dinner and a proposal. But that was too little, too late.
